Blog Post Llandyrnog Shop

My amazing sketching journey continues and I am currently sketching at a fabulous community shop, which also houses a cafe and post office. It has been a joy being part of it and observing the many locals and visitors who pass through the shop. It is so much more than just a village shop and I hope that my sketches have gone some way to illustrate that. My first session was in the shop on a Tuesday morning. word had got out that I would be there and a couple of locals were awaiting my arrival, followed by a few phone calls and more locals joining, once they had met me and understood what I intended to do. We sat in the back room initially folding paper into small sketchbooks and exploring the materials I had bought along. Then they started to sketch and I wandered around the shop capturing those that popped in for a drink, purchase or just a chat. Patricia McKinnon Day, local artist and this projects co-ordinator was also present documenting the activities in photograph and film, which is now edited and viewable via a screen in the back room of the cafe area.

In the afternoon Patricia and I moved over to the local primary school and I ran a mini sketchbooks and sketching workshop, finishing the session outdoors in the school field. The school and pupils were all so very positive and accommodating, making for a really great session. I look forward to returning at the end of term to see how their sketching has developed and to share more sketching activities.

I am returning to the shop for a final session on Tuesday 23rd June 10-12. I will be sketching shop activity and sharing my passion for sketching with anyone who would like to have a go. I have all the materials you need, just turn up and buy yourself a drink or something from the cafe, to join me in sitting down and recording a snippet of life at the shop.

If you are wanting a run out, do think about calling into Llandyrnog Community Shop, you will not be disappointed, it’s a treasure.
